Eleven-year-old Whit Whitaker lives in the zoo. His father is the head elephant keeper. His mother is the zoo's director. Life in the zoo might seem really cool, but to him, it was so irksome! In fact, he said that on TV! Then one day he meets the Bird Girl, Stella. Whit calls Stella "the Bird Girl" because Stella comes to the zoo and draws various bird species, such as flamingos. Phil, Stella's father, has a gun. He shot Stella's brother Hugo in the leg, so Hugo ran away.
Stella and Whit now talk about various things. Whit is happy that he has someone to actually talk to. He and Juan Carlos, another boy, stole Phil's gun. But Phil is angry and wants his gun back. So, Stella said, "Hide me in the zoo."
Whit's jaw touched the ground, but he still hides her. He hides her in the barn. Unfortunately, there is a fire. Luckily, Stella escapes. But then, Stella runs away, by herself. She is caught by the police and now, Stella's family the Taylors moved. Whit is starting middle school! Then, he receives a letter from "Bird Girl. It had a picture of a peacock and a boy that looked a lot like Whit. The letter said:
"Ferdinand and Whit
A Cowboy Needs a Horse Peacock??
Thanks for everything. You are a true friend.
Love, Bird Girl"
Now he feels right where he belongs.
I would recommend this book to 4th to 6th graders who seem to have an interest in this book.
